Population Level Estimate of Type 1 Diabetes Risk Genes in Children Study

Dr. Griffin launched the Population Level Estimate of Type 1 Diabetes Risk Genes in Children (PLEDGE) study during his time at Sanford Health. Through the study, approximately 10,000 children across five states have undergone screening for type 1 diabetes (T1D) during routine pediatric care visits. Identifying people at risk before symptoms develop allows physicians to monitor rising blood sugar and begin insulin before diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening complication of T1D, occurs.

At BRI, the Griffin Lab is expanding this work by evaluating optimal monitoring strategies for people with T1D autoantibodies identified through PLEDGE. Researchers are also developing approaches to integrate T1D autoantibody screening into routine clinical care for additional populations.
