The plasma membrane provides a selective barrier between the cell and its environment and is essential for the function of both single-celled and multicellular organisms. Damage caused by mechanical, chemical or biological stress can compromise this barrier, leading to loss of cell integrity and function and contributing to inflammation and the development of many diseases. Cells use multiple mechanisms to repair membrane damage and maintain cellular homeostasis. Despite these protective processes, many molecular pathways that detect membrane damage and coordinate repair remain poorly understood.
The Stefani Lab investigates how cells respond to damage caused by bacterial toxins, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and disruptions in ion imbalance. Researchers combine genetic screening with imaging-based technologies to identify the signaling pathways involved and link genetic variation to measurable cellular responses.
