The violence that erupted on the fringe of lawful peaceful protests, just blocks away from Benaroya Research Institute (BRI) and across the country, has been heartbreaking to witness.
We are in the midst of a perfect storm of devastating events, from the unjust deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery to the COVID-19 pandemic and its trail of death, uncertainty and economic turmoil.
We must remember that for too many, injustice, inequity and fear are not just a hallmark of the spring of 2020, but part of everyday existence. This must change.
At BRI, injustice goes against our core values of Integrity and Respect and has no place in our society or in medical research. We stand against racism, discrimination and senseless violence along with our Virginia Mason colleagues, patients and community members.
We believe that we are stronger and better because of our differences and that treating each other with dignity is requisite. We are learning, and we will continue to take the steps needed to ensure we are partners in the fight against systemic racism.
