As an alliance that represents investigators across many autoimmune disease, we propose that there is a common framework that can be applied to the development of autoimmunity, which includes three phases:
- Biological activity (no symptoms)
- Evidence of target organ involvement (non-specific symptoms)
- Clinical/Symptomatic Disease (meets officially recognized diagnostic/classification criteria)
It is our goal to be able to identify markers of and treatments that can be applied to phase B to prevent or delay the development of clinical disease.
