Uma Malhotra, MD

Background Information
Dr. Malhotra received her MD from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the premier institution for medical training and research in India. She then pursued a postdoctoral fellowship in T cell immunology at Benaroya Research Institute (1988-91), following which she completed her internship in Internal Medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University and residency at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco (1991-94). She returned to Seattle for a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington (UW) (1995-98) and then assumed a faculty position at the UW/Fred Hutch until her move to Virginia Mason (VM) in 2008. She has been a Member in the Section of Infectious Diseases at VM since 2008, active in both the clinical and research arenas. She also remains faculty at the UW, serving as Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine. In addition, she is Director of the Transplant Infectious Diseases program at VM. Her specific clinical interests include the care of immunocompromised patients.
Area of Research
Through her research at the Fred Hutch she helped clarify barriers to the generation and maintenance of effective CD4+ T cell function in HIV-1 infection. She played a lead role in developing a UW International AIDS Research and Training Program (IARTP) site in New Delhi with independent and sustainable research capacities for the prevention and control of HIV. After moving to VM she continued studies of T-helper responses in collaboration with researchers at the BRI, shifting her focus from HIV to Influenza and Flavivirus infections. She now serves as the Clinical PI for the Infectious Diseases and Vaccine Registry at BRI. During the COVID pandemic she served as PI, leading clinical trials at VM for management of COVID-19. She also played a key role in developing and supporting a COVID translational research program at the institution.
