Benaroya Research Institute Promotes Homer W. Lane Jr. to Executive Director

Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) has promoted Homer W. Lane Jr. to executive director of BRI. He will also serve as vice president for research at Virginia Mason Medical Center (VMMC). Both posts are effective July 1. Lane joined BRI in 2011 as BRI chief financial officer and chief administrative officer, making significant advances in finances, operations and facility expansion. He succeeds Jack Nagan, JD, who retired June 30.

Lane will lead all of BRI’s business operations including finances, grants and contracts, human resources, information technology, communications, intellectual property development, the clinical research program, facilities and administrative services. He is also responsible for the overall coordination and oversight of research activities at VMMC.

“BRI is a worldwide leader in identifying the causes of autoimmune and immune mediated diseases and applying these findings to improve diagnosis, disease management and treatment,” said Lane. “I’m excited to lend my expertise to this organization because of its great impact on medical research.  The institution is unique in bringing together three arms of medical research—clinical research, translational research and laboratory research.”

Lane previously served for 12 years as chief financial officer for the Marine Biological Laboratory, a research and educational institution based in Woods Hole, Mass. Prior to that, he spent more than two decades in the banking industry and held positions in investment banking, treasury, global services and commercial lending areas.

Lane received an MBA and a BS in civil engineering from Columbia University. He currently serves as vice president for the Association of Independent Research Institutes (AIRI).
