In 2004, Virginia Mason Medical Center announced the formation of the Digestive Disease Institute (DDI) at Virginia Mason. The DDI Clinical Research Unit (DDI CRU) has been formed as part of the Institute to facilitate research into gastroenterology diseases. The DDI CRU is dedicated to being the leader in quality of care for patients including the conduct of research. Our goal is to increase treatment options available to gastroenterology patients and improve the patient experience through integration of clinical care and research. We strive to provide a supportive and focused environment in which patients, staff and physicians may participate in clinical research.

Research at the DDI CRU is currently facilitated by a staff of five research coordinators and two research assistants. There are currently 27 research projects being conducted with 15 active studies. Most of the gastroenterologists at Virginia Mason Medical Center participate in these studies either as a principal investigator or as a sub-investigator.
