Anti-CD3 mAb (teplizumab) for Prevention of Diabetes in Relatives at Risk
Study Name: Anti-CD3 mAb (teplizumab) for Prevention of Diabetes in Relatives at Risk for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitis
Principal Investigator: Carla Greenbaum, MD
Email: diabetes@BenaroyaResearch.org
What is the Anti-CD3 Prevention of Diabetes Trial?
If someone in your family has type 1 diabetes, you and other family members may be at risk. TrialNet is working to delay or prevent diabetes in people at risk for developing type 1 diabetes. Teplizumab is a medication which has been shown to preserve insulin secretion in people with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. This study is exploring whether Teplizumab can help stop or slow down the autoimmune reaction that is destroying insulin producing cells in people at high risk.
Who can participate?
- Individuals ages 8 to 45 years (enrollment will initialy be limited to subjects 16-45 years of age)
- You have been referred by TrialNet's Natural History Study
What will study participants be asked to do?
You will complete a 14-day study infusion.
- Half of the people will receive infusions of teplizumab.
- Half of the people will receive infusion of placebo (infusions that contain an inactive substance).
- Neither you nor your study team will know which you are getting.
During the first year, you will need to come to a study center for additional study visits and blood tests. After the first year, study visits will be every 6 months, and at other times as needed.
