What is the Il-2 and Rapa intervention in recent-onset type 1 diabetes study?

Studies have suggested that combining the medicines IL-2 or interleukin-2 (Proleukin)and Sirolimus (Rapamune)may save the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas. While both of these medicines are already in use for patients with other conditions, they have not been used together to treat type 1 diabetes. The goal of this study is to find out if taking the medicines together is safe for people with type 1 diabetes.

Who can participate?

Individuals diagnosed with type 1 diabetes within
the past 4 years,

Between the ages of 18 and 45 years,

Who have autoantibodies and some insulin
production verified through screening.

What do I have to do as a study participant?

There are three parts to this study:

Screening visits: Will include tests for the
presence of diabetes-related autoantibodies and to
see how much insulin your body is still producing.
Other test will evaluate your overall health.

Study medication treatment period: You will take
the study medications for the first three months,
and will complete clinic visits to gather
information about the effects of the study drugs
on your immune system, your diabetes control and
general overall health.

Follow-up visits: You will return for additional
visits after taking the study medications. There
is no cost to participate in this study and
participation is voluntary.
