What is the Rheumatic Disease Registry and Blood Repository study?

The Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason is conducting this research study to help us understand the causes and long term health effects of rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus, and relapsing polychondritis. The goal of this study is to improve our understanding of the human immune system and immune-mediated diseases. We are particularly interested in genes that are associated with these diseases, and how the immune system is affected by the disease.

Who can participate?

Anybody with an immune-mediated rheumatic disease, including rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, relapsing polychondritis, or lupus can participate in this research. Please contact us if you are interested in participating. You may contact Melissa Peda, at 206-625-73730 x65223 to get more information about this research study.

What do I have to do as a study participant?

If you decide to participate, we will store health
information about you in a computer database. We
may also ask you to donate a blood sample for
research tests. This can be done by mail, or in
person. We will use your information and blood
samples to support our on going research of
immune-mediated diseases.

We will ask you to come to the Virginia Mason
Clinic for a short meeting with one of the study
coordinators. We will collect your contact and
health information and draw a blood sample. We
can do this by mail if you are not able to come
to Virginia Mason.
We may contact you periodically to update your
personal and clinical information, or ask you
to donate another blood sample. You may
choose to participate or not at any time.
You are not obligated to provide any further
information or to participate in any future study.

If you decide to participate in this research
study, you will be a part of the Autoimmune
Disease Registry and we will use your health
information and blood samples indefinitely. You
can also ask us to withdraw your information at
any time.

We are required to protect the privacy of your
health information and we have taken many steps
to protect the information that is entered into
the computer registry.
