Our 2007 annual report highlights Benaroya Research Institute’s (BRI) significant achievements in its scientific programs this past year, directed towards our mission to discover causes and cures of autoimmune diseases. 2007 was a landmark year for research financial support, as funding for BRI reached an all-time high of $24 million. A part of this funding helped to accelerate studies in the prevention and treatment of autoimmune (Type I) diabetes, including a prevention study using oral insulin and pioneering clinical interventions for protecting insulin-secreting islet cells in children with early autoimmune symptoms. One year after the Center for Control of Inflammation and Tissue Repair (CITR) opened, the research team is working in the new and exciting field of “tissue engineering.” This innovative science includes replacements for blood vessels, ligaments and skeletal muscle to control tissue rejection and limit scar formation. BRI scientists also studied the use of tetramers for understanding common allergies and developing improved treatment options. Finally, BRI brought the latest treatments to patients in 2007, with more than 100 clinical trials conducted this past year.
