BRI Science Friday--New Sessions for 2012

Science Friday is an opportunity to learn about the remarkable discoveries taking place at Benaroya Research Institute. The free event includes a light breakfast and conversation with Gerald Nepom, MD, PhD, Director of BRI, a laboratory tour led by scientists and discussion with board members and other guests.

BRI Speakers Bureau

The Benaroya Research Institute Speakers Bureau provides background on autoimmune diseases and information on the research being conducted at BRI to find the causes and cures for these diseases.The speakers bureau program includes lay and scientist speakers, powerful personal stories about autoimmune diseases and time for audience questions. Our highly-trained speakers are BRI board members, scientists and volunteers who have been affected by autoimmune diseases and are committed to sharing the groundbreaking research happening in our community. Benaroya Research Institute Seafair Triathlon

Date: July 22
Description: Athletes from all around the Pacific Northwest swim, cycle and run their way to fitness and athletic excellence at the Benaroya Research Institute Seafair Triathlon. Seward Park on Lake Washington serves as a pristine venue for this sprint distance triathlon and offers an incredible experience for athletes of all ability levels.
* Olympic Distance: 1-mile swim, 20-mile bike, 10K run
* Sprint Distance: .5-mile swim, 12-mile bike, 5K run
* Relay Teams: 2-person and 3-person
* Kids Triathlon: Kids can “tri”, too, on a fun, custom-designed course just for them!

Boeing Classic Golf Tournament to Benefit BRI

Date: August 20-26
Description: The Boeing Classic is an Official Event on the PGA TOUR Champions Tour, which features the legends of golf 50 years of age or older. Mark Calcavecchia is the tournament’s defending Champion after a playoff victory at the 2011 Boeing Classic, which also featured record numbers of volunteers (1,018) and spectators (81,000) during Tournament Week. The winner of the 2010 Presidents Award honoring the best event on the Champions Tour, in the tournament’s seven-year history more than 3.2 million dollars has been raised for the Heart Institute at Virginia Mason Medical Center, the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason and additional Greater Seattle Charities. Grapes on the Green

Date: Aug. 24
To help end the first day of Boeing Classic tournament play, The Golf Club at Newcastle will host the fourth annual Grapes on the Green event on Friday, Aug. 24. Guests will enjoy premier wine tastings from select wineries throughout the world, a multi-course dinner and an elite live auction featuring exclusive travel opportunities and rare wine lots. Proceeds from Grapes on the Green 2012 will go towards raising awareness for the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason and the Opportunity for Success Scholarship Fund. Illuminations Luncheon

Please mark your calendars and join us Friday, Nov. 2, for the second annual Illuminations Luncheon. Hear from our world renowned scientists about the work being done at Benaroya Research Institute, an international leader in immune system and autoimmune disease research. Our patient speakers will also discuss real life advances that they have experienced because of the work being done at BRI striving to eliminate autoimmune diseases. MS Walk 
Organization: Multiple Sclerosis Society
Date: April 14 - 15
Description: The Tacoma, Bainbridge, (4/14) and Seattle (4/15) Walk MS events are the rallying point of the MS Movement, a community coming together to raise funds and celebrate hope for the future.  Greater Northwest Chapter participants and volunteers of Walk MS collected approximately $2.1 million in 2011 for the MS cause. Diabetes Expo
Organization: American Diabetes Association

Description: The Expo is FREE held at the Washington State Convention Center and includes health screenings, cooking demonstration, product and service exhibitors as well as leading experts talking about diabetes management and prevention. Seattle Autoimmunity Day
Organization: Autoimmune Advocacy Alliance
Date: May 19
Seattle Autoimmunity Day will be held at the Volney Auditorium at Virginia Mason Medical Center. The educational forum will feature prominent key note speakers who work in the fields of autoimmune diseases as well as a patient panel of people living with such conditions as Type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, lupus, celiac disease or others of the more than 80 autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune Advocacy Alliance (A3) brings together advocacy groups, health professionals and individuals interested in furthering the understanding and treatments for autoimmune disease. South Sound Walk

Description: The JDRF South Sound Walk to Cure Diabetes at Cheney Stadium draws people together in a healthy activity for a worthy cause, raising money to improve the lives of every person affected by Type 1 Diabetes by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing the disease. Dinner of Champions

Description: The Dinner of Champions is a premier gala event honoring local philanthropists who have made a significant contribution to the community. It is an elegant evening featuring a five-course fine dining experience, entertainment, and the presentation of the prestigious Hope Award and Spirit Award to individuals who are making a significant impact in the lives of people with MS. Beat the Bridge
Organization: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Description: The Nordstrom Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes is a fundraiser for JDRF, the largest nongovernmental funder of research to cure, treat, and prevent Type 1 diabetes.  The event consists of an 8k Run and Wheelchair Race, 4-Mile Walk, 1-Mile Fun Run, and Diaper Derby for toddlers.  The event is called Beat the Bridge because the University Bridge is raised during the race and the goal is to BEAT the raising of the bridge. Public Symposium on Arthritis
Organization: Arthritis Foundation

Pacific NW Diabetes Camps
Organization: Various, Diabetes Education and Camping Association (DECA) 
Date: Summer 2012
Description: Diabetes summer camp is one of the best experiences for a child with diabetes. The camps are held in Spokane, Shelton, Montana, Idaho and Vashon Island.  Camp is a place to learn self-confidence, to be with other kids with diabetes, and to simply have a great time.  BRI attends these camps to screen campers and relatives for two TrialNet prevention studies for Type 1 diabetes.  Drs. Greenbaum and Sanda are attending physicians at many of the camps. Each of the diabetes camps has its own organization. However, the Diabetes Education and Camping Association (DECA) has a menu where you can find camps by state. The DECA website is http://www.diabetescamps.org./

Seattle-Sweden Day

Step Out to Fight Diabetes Walk – Seattle/S. Sound

Life Sciences Research Weekend
